Can I Lose Weight Without Tracking Macros?

Macro tracking is a useful tool, but it’s not the end all be all of nutritional success.

The short answer… yes! You might be relieved to hear that macro tracking isn’t the only option!

I have tons of clients who are not interested in macro tracking. Yes, tracking is a really useful tool that does streamline the nutrition process, but it’s not the end all be all of nutritional success. Macro tracking is just one tool that ultimately helps us build awareness around what we’re eating, which in turn helps us to manage portion sizes and regulate macro and micronutrient intake with more granularity.

But tracking macros is not the only way to build awareness around the foods you’re eating and make body composition changes. There are dozens of other strategies to help you hit the nutrition targets needed to reach your goals. It all comes down to awareness; being conscious of what you’re eating and paying attention to your hunger cues.

Aside from macro tracking, here are 10 alternative portion control tactics that you can use to help facilitate fat loss (or whatever your body composition goals are)

  • Planning your meals ahead of time

  • Avoid eating directly out of the package (aka pre-portion)

  • Use a smaller plate/bowl

  • Use hand size portion guides

  • Prioritize eating protein and fiber first

  • Put your fork down every few bites

  • Have a sip of water every few bites

  • Avoid distractions (TV, phone, etc.)

  • Use the balanced plate approach

  • Set a reminder to trigger you to be more mindful of hunger cues

If a coach has ever told you that you have to track macros to reach your goals… run! Will it sometimes make it easier? Absolutely! But is it the right approach for everyone? Absolutely not!
